SPECIAL PROGRAMS & EVENTS -
All programs and special events require sign-up/registration at the Library. Although, we do sign-ups by telephone, we encourage
parents/guardians to bring their children into the Library to sign-up - this familiarizes the child to the surroundings and people and makes the whole experience more enjoyable.
Lola Harens, our Children's Librarian is wonderful with the children and reads some delightful stories, always encouraging
the love of reading. All persons participating in any Library program/event are encouraged to get a library card -
Getting a Card. Programming and events for adults is more selective and topical although we are trying to expand those services.
Please call the Library - 668-5275, for more information on dates, times, special programs and further information on any of the programs listed below.
Programs for Children:
- Children's Preschool Storyhours(M-Th). During school and summer, 2-3 sessions per day for ages 2-5.
Read Stories, play games, learn to socialize and have fun. Above all, learn the joys of reading!
- Summer Reading Program. The Library participates in the state-wide summer reading program, offering various prizes
for children who complete a set number of reading minutes. The 2008 summer program will be called xxx and will feature programs for both children and adults.
- MMC/YCL Tutoring (Reading/Math). Called
"The More You Read" program. The Library, in partnership with Mount Marty College employs work study students majoring in education
to tutor grade school through junior high children in reading and math. Tutors and children may meet at any public place of their choosing
(most teams prefer the Library) once a week for an hour. Tutors are matched carefully for each child's needs/schedule.
- Day Care Storyhours. Want a Librarian to come to your SD state
licensed daycare facility on a one-time or regular basis to deliver an
exciting storyhour for the children you supervise? The day care in-home
storyhours have been a great success with the Yankton community. Just
contact Lola Harens and she'll help
you set up a time and shape a program "just for your group."
Programs for Adults:
- Computer Classes. From time-to-time, the Library offers PC use classes as they relate to using the Internet to search the SDLN card catalog,
accessing the other SDLN and Library databases, using e-mail, simple word processing, and generally, using the Library's PC equipment (printers, scanner, etc.).
- Murder-By-The-Book Club. Co-sponsored by the Library, this fun group meets once a month at a non-meeting with non-officers to discuss
mystery books and authors. The group reads one-minute mysteries, acts out mysteries and attends/performs mystery dinner theaters. The group also invites various mystery authors
to talk and sign books.
Mystery/Crime Resources
Humanities Reading Program. Sponsored wholly by the South Dakota
Humanities Council, a leader leads the group through a thematic book discussion over the course of three sessions.
Themes cover a wide gamut of world literature and time periods, ranging from Australian and Asian literature to modern American authors. A set of books is always
offered for sale at a discount;
however, purchase is not required.
Friend's Group. The Friend's is an organization of about 90 members who gather together to raise money for the Library through some innovative and fun projects. The majority of funds raised
occur through a monthly book sale, held in the Yankton Community Library garage once-a-month - the
2nd Saturday of every month from 10 am - 1 pm. Through these monies, the group has given the Library
CD music display racks, a TV/VCR, a leased book subscription for best-sellers and other pieces of much-needed furniture. Active since 1990, the group also enjoys social functions and get-togethers.
Membership is $5.00 per year.
Book Delivery Outreach Program. Once per month, Library staff deliver materials to a number of individuals in nursing homes, convenient care and the homebound. A few Special conditions must be met in order
to be considered for delivery, but we are trying to expand our program. The entire range of collections (CD-music, books, videotapes, audiobooks and large print books) is available and staff take great care in selecting
those materials and keeping track of genres, authors and specific titles. We can even get items on ILL (inter-library loan).
